Exhibition: Time asks the weather | feldfünf, Berlin

With Weathering With Me (2022), Juliane Tübke creates an installation for the exhibition based on interviews conducted in Kochi (Kerala, India). People from different occupational groups and generations report how weather conditions affect their everyday lives. They talk about noticeable changes in climate and characterise water as a life-sustaining and relieving element in the form of rain, but also as a threat in the form of floods and the accompanying landslides. Listen here.

The artist began her research in Kumbalangi, a fishing village in the middle of the Kerala backwaters. There, she took impressions of the parts of house walls and tree barks that bore traces of erosion and the last monsoon rains. In contrast to the immaculate aluminium bases, the fine clay imprints in Shells (2020) reveal the direct power of the weather, whose force of creation is brought out even more through the subtle application of colour spray. A framework is created between the artist, the element of water, cycles of weather, and natural or man-made trace carriers.
For the watercolour series Cochin Tides (2020–2022), Juliane Tübke takes her experimental approach further by allowing water to have an even stronger influence. She coats paper with such a thin film of water that even a cautious touch of ink on the surface sets off a dynamic flow of colour. Although it is the artist who triggers this impulse, she can neither steer nor control as it progresses. The provoked reaction of the water with the ink on paper produces an automatic aesthetic manifestation of that moment. She includes materials found on site, such as plastic sheeting or fishing nets, in the intentional chain of reactions. In this way, water is not only given agency, but consciously used as a driving force in the artistic process.
While Juliane Tübke’s Weathering project continued on the interactive website www.weatheringwithme.com, for the exhibition Zeit fragt Wetter, she has developed a spatial installation for the first time, transferring the collected material back into analogue space. The watercolour drawings Cochin Tides are transferred onto chiffon, a semi-transparent fabric, so that the ambient light and the movements of the viewers in the room affect the perception of the images. Just as the surface of the water reacted directly in the process of creating the watercolours, the fragile surface of the fabric also reacts directly here.
